Special Issue Call for Papers: Historical Scholarship in Health Professions Education Editorial team:
Conversations about the value of history in health professions education (HPE) have occurred in some form or another for many years. Indeed, a consideration of a topic in medical education invariably used to involve a discussion of its history. Over time, however, history and historical methodologies have fallen to the periphery of HPER. Nevertheless, historical methodologies can offer many insights into topics in health professions education, including social injustice, educational spaces, and professional identity formation. They can also help researchers to be attuned to the particularities of temporal, geographical, socio-political, and economic contexts. Indeed, rigour in historical research demands that researchers take the perspective of their subjects, that a multitude of evidence and voices are considered, and that the contingent nature of past and present events are carefully considered as a means through which to make visible tacit values and processes. That said, important questions remain about how to conduct historical research and the ways it may help or hinder broader goals. This special issue creates space for a focused examination of historical research in the field. Studies in this special issue may examine health education in a variety of historical and geographical contexts or they may also advance knowledge of the benefits and limitations of historical approaches for pedagogy, scholarship, and the provision of health care globally. Papers exploring methodological issues, including the nature of historical knowledge, the place of theory in historical research, the positionality of historical scholarship, and the challenges of interdisciplinary translation are also welcome. The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2025.
