President's Message January 2025Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed a lovely holiday season with family and friends. For professors and students, I hope your return to the classroom and campuses has gone smoothly, and you have returned rested and reinvigorated. I also wish those celebrating the Lunar New Year on January 29th a happy start to the Year of the Snake! Your school, university, or student association may be hosting a celebration (e.g. the Johns Hopkins Lunar New Year 2025 event hosted by the Asian Pacific American Nursing Student Association). Check in your local community to join in the fun. For our friends and colleagues in the Greater Los Angeles area, this time is sadly one of fear, worry, evacuation, and loss of home due to the wildfires. As someone who experienced the wildfires in the interior of British Columbia in 2021 and worried from a distance when my mother needed to be evacuated from the wildfires in Nova Scotia in 2023, please know that all those impacted are in my thoughts at this difficult time. Nurses, as always, continue to do their jobs in hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities threatened by the fires, even when forced to evacuate from their homes and places of work, as reporting by the Los Angeles Times, other news outlets, and nursing unions show. You can lend your financial or volunteer support to those forced to evacuate through the American Red Cross, International Medical Corps, or the Mutual Aid L.A. Network (spreadsheet of volunteer organisations). In AAHN news, the call for abstracts for our 42nd Annual Conference to be held in Wilmington, N.C., from October 16-18, 2025, is currently open! We have three tracks for abstracts:
While we encourage the submission of research & educational innovations that examine the historical significance of race and/or place for nursing or healthcare practice, education, and/or policy which align with our conference theme, as always, we are happy to receive abstracts on any aspect of nursing and healthcare history. Abstracts are due February 28th via our Oxford Abstracts portal. For more information on the call for abstracts, see our website. The virtual Healthcare History, Policy, and Equity Online Conference for Graduate Students and Early Career Researchers will be held from 12-5 Eastern on February 28th and 9-2:30 Eastern on March 1st. We would love you to join us for the conference to support our students and early career researchers and hear some excellent research presentations. Registration for the virtual conference is available here. A schedule of presenters will be posted shortly. The cost is $10 for student AAHN members, $20 for other AAHN members, and $50 for non-AAHN members. I close with a friendly reminder for you all to renew your membership. You must renew by January 31st to receive your print copy of volume 33 of the Nursing History Review, now published by Penn State University Press. With hearty best wishes, Erin |
