Purpose: The purpose of this pre-conference will be to provide an overview of a history framework for meaningful integration of nursing history into curricula. A 5-step approach for educators to thread history content into existing courses will be shared. Examples of history content, types of sources, and teaching strategies that can actively engage students will be discussed. Historians will gain insight about nursing education’s needs related to nursing history and how to share their research to help meet the needs. There will be opportunities for open dialogue and sharing. Educators and historians will work together to create strong threads of nursing history in nursing curricula.

By the end of the pre-conference, the attendee will be able to:

  1. Discuss the power of nursing history to enhance the educational experience of nursing students and the development of entry-level and advanced-level nurses.
  2. Describe a history framework that supports meaningful integration of history content in nursing curricula.
  3. Summarize a 5-step approach to thread history content into existing courses.
  4. List a variety of history sources and topics that can actively engage students and enhance their learning.
  5. Recall examples of nursing history topics that align with the AACN Essentials’ 10 Domains of Nursing.
  6. Outline individualized next steps to assist nursing programs to thread history into curricula.
