Jane A. Delano
1862 - 1919

Jane A. Delano died in France while on an inspection.
She was originally buried in Loire, France,
but was later moved to the nurses section at Arlington National Cemetery.

Some of the accomplishments of Jane A. Delano:

  • Graduated in 1886 from Bellevue Hospital Training School for Nurses
  • 1888 worked in Jacksonville FL during a yellow fever epidemic
  • Superintendent of nurses University Hospital, Philadelphia
  • Superintent of Girls' Department, House of Refuge
  • Director of Training School for Nurses at Bellevue
  • 1909-1912 Served as Superintendent of Army Nurse Corps
  • 1909-1911 Served as president of the Nurses Associated Alumnae; during her term it was re-named the American Nurses Association
  • 1909 Became chair of National Committee of the Red Cross Nursing Service
  • Wrote a monthly column on Red Cross nursing for the American Joural of Nursing
  • 1919 Died in France while on official Red Cross business. Was buried with military honors and awarded the Distinguished Service Medal.

Schuyler County Hospital in Dix, NY has a Jane Delano Memorial, complete with some of her personal items including a monogrammed dresser set, U.S. Pan-Pacific Exposition Medal, American Red Cross Gold Medal of Merit, Austrian War Relief Medal, Japan Medal of Merit, WWI American Red Cross Service Badge; American Red Cross Nurse Badge, Army Nurse Corps Insignia, and the Bellevue Training School Nurse's Pin.
