Martha Schneider has been appointed Nurse manager of ICU, TCU, Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville. Claire Chatterton has received her doctorate from the University of Salford, UK. Her thesis was entitled, "The Weakest Link in the chain of nursing? Recruitment and retention in mental health nursing. 1948 -1968" Arlene Keeling, received the Dock Award for her book Nursing and the Privilege of Prescription, 1893–2000 [Ohio State University Press]. Clara J Richardson is now the Director of the Center for Nursing History, Ethics, Human Rights and Innovations at Purdue University. Teresa O'Neill was award a Fulbright Scholarship for Nigeria, for 2007-08. Tess also co-authored a companion text to Clark's 5th edition of Community Health Nursing: Advocacy for Populations. Elaine Marshall has accepted the position of Endowed Chair at Georgia Southern University, School of Nursing. Elaine C Hubbard has been honored by having the Center for Nursing Research in Aging, University of Rochester School for Nursing, named after her. Shirley Fondillerhas published Go, and Do Likewise a history of the Cornell University-New York Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, 1877-1979. Mary E. Gibson has completed her doctorate from the University of Virginia. Her dissertation is: "From Charity to an Able Body: the Care and Treatment of Disabled Children in Virginia 1910-1935". There is a new book about Imogene King's Conceptual System: Middle Range Theory Development Using King's Conceptual System has been published by Springer Publishing. Editors are Christina Leibold Sieloff, PhD, RN, CNA; Maureen A. Frey, RN, PhD. Jan Leonard completed a doctorate in nursing from University of Masachusetts Amherst last Sepetember, 2006. Her dissertation was "The Role of Professional Nursing in the Origin of the Newborns' and Mothers' Health Protection Act of 1996, from a Feminist Perspective, 1981-1996". Luther Christman has been honored by the ANA's establishment of the Luther Christman Award. The Luther Christman award recognizes the significant contribution an individual man has made to the nursing profession. It is named in honor of Dr. Luther Christman and his outstanding service to advancing the nursing profession. Arlene Keeling presented "American Nursing and Pandemic Flu, 1918: Responding to the Unexpected" at the International Congress of Nursing conference in Yokohama, Japan. Thelma Robinson's book Nisei Cadet Nurse of World War II. Patriotism in Spite of Prejudice. will be translated and published in Japan. Edie West has been the recipient of the following grants
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing selected Drs. Arlene Keeling, John Kirchgessner and Barbara Brodie to write a comprehensive history of the organization, and its service to the profession. Dr. Keeling is the Principal Investigator of the project which is scheduled for completion in time for the association’s 40th anniversary in 2009. Sharon Hadenfeldt completed her PhD in December of 2006 at the University of Nebraska. Her dissertation was A Historical Study of Nurse Anesthesia Education in Nebraska. Pat van Betten successfully prepared small grant requests for Sigma Theta Tau International to fund displays for the Nevada State Nurses' Association 75th Anniversary. Pat credits the Grant Writing Workshop held as the Pre-Conference in 2005, Atlanta. Mary Gibson successfully defended her dissertation "From Charity to an Able Body: the care and treatment of disabled children in Virginia 1910-1935." at the School of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania. Joy Buck, Post-Doctoral Fellow in Nursing History and Health Policy at the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania, is the 2007 recipient of the Brodie Research Fellowship. Her research is entitled “Nursing the Borderlands of Life: Reconstructing Care for the Dying, 1945-2006.” Wanda Hiestand has received the Columbia University's Teachers College Nursing Education Alumni Association Achievement Award for Leadership in Professional and Allied Organizations. Jennifer Casavant Telford successfully defended her dissertation "American Red Cross Nursing during World War I: Opportunities and Obstacles." at the School of Nursing, University of Virginia. She is presently Term Faculty, School of Nursing, George Mason University. Barbara Chamberlain completed her dissertation, The Lived Experience of Being a Baccalaureate Nursing Student for Whom English is a Second Language" and received a DNSc from Widener University She was also awarded the National Student Nurses' highest award, honorary lifetime membership, for dedication and support of nursing students across the country. Marilyn E. Flood has a new book, Promise on Parnassus The First Century of the UCSF School of Nursing published by the University of California-San Francisco Nursing Press. Sadie M. Smalls has received a small grant from Teachers College (Columbia University) Nursing Education Alumni Association to write a biography of Estelle Massey Osborne first Black nurse to receiveve maters in nursing. Arlene Keeling is the author of "Nursing and the Privilege of Prescription, 1893-2000" just published by the Ohio State University Press. Christine Silverstein has published Therapeutic interpersonal interactions: The sacrificial lamb? in Perspectives in Psychiatric Care 42(1)33-41. Peggy Jean Ledbetter is Dean Emerita at Northwestern State University and in January was inducted into the Louisiana State Nurses Association Hall of Fame.

Catherine Dodd, Jacqueline Brooks, Edith West all received funding from Nurses Educational Funds, Inc. Nancy Harris completed her dissertation "Alice Magaw: The Mother of Anesthesia" at the University of Iowa. Janet Bryant represents staff nurse issues on the editorial board of American Nurse. She is also a Director and Chair of Nominations for District One of Nevada Nurses Association. Eleanor Crowder Bjoring has published Passing the Legacy: History of the Last Fifty Years of the School of Nursing at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. M. Elizabeth Carnegiehas been named Senior Adviser, New York University College of Nursing. Joy Buck has received funding from ANF for "Setting the Standard for Specialization in Hospice and Palliative Nursing, 1985-2006". She has also been designated the 2006 Anne Zimmerman/ANF Awards Scholar. Beth Norman appears in a documentary titled, "History in Focus: the Flags of Our Fathers" on the History Channel. This national award is presented to one person in recognition of distinguished support and service to nursing students. Karen Buhler-Wilkerson and Jean Whelan for the The American Academy of Nursing Expert Panel on Nursing History is pleased to announce the funding of "Nursing, History and Healthcare: A Website". The sponsoring institution is the University of Pennsylvania, Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing. The grant, for $150,000, is a three year National Library of Medicine Scholarly Works in Biomedicine and Health grant and will result in the creation and development of a website which will document and analyze nursing's most compelling and controversial political and social issues and place them in their historical context. The website will address in electronic format a wide range of issues critical to comprehending and broadening our understanding of health care and nursing concerns. These include but are not limited to the role of professional nurses, nurse shortages and workplace problems, access to care, advance nursing practice, racism, and public health issues. The project represents an innovative, one of a kind, creative method of disseminating historical information and analysis to a broad audience and promises to make a significant contribution to our knowledge base of nursing history and its close connection to health care policy. The guest of honor will be Professor Emerita Signe Skott Cooper ('43 ZC, '48 BS), internationally recognized and greatly respected teacher and nursing historian as well as curator of the School of Nursing's historical collection. Proceeds from the event will go toward construction of a nursing sciences building on the University of Wisconsin-Madison's health sciences campus. Dr. Sonya Grypma recently completed doctoral studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, and is currently a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of British Columbia, where she is researching Canadian Nurses who were interned under the Japanese in China between 1941 and 1945. Dr Lusk has also received a Rockefeller Archive Center Grant Award for Nuring Patients with Cancer, 1880-1950 . Sioban Nelson has also received a Rockefeller Archive Center Grant Award for A Study of Nursing in China, 1900 - 1951. Marianne Tallberg received International Red Cross Florence Nightingale medal " for the contribution to Finnish health care especially nursing education, in nursing history and historical research and in information technology, professional language of nursing, terminology and classifications" Catherine J. Dodd, MS, RN, has been inducted as a fellow into the American Academy of Nursing. Florence Melchior is the 2002 winner of the CAHN/ACHN Dr. Margaret Allemang Scholarship in Nursing History. Her doctoral thesis, supervised by Geertje Boschma, is about student labour at two Alberta hospitals during the early 20th century. John Parascandola received the 1st Sidney Edelstein Award for Outstanding Achievement in the History of Chemistry. He is presenting a lecture on "Quarantining Prostitutes: VD Rapid Treatment Centers of WWII America" December 11 at the National Library of Medicine. Arlene Keeling received a three year $150,000.00 grant (G13 - Publication grant) from the National Library of Medicine to research the "History of Nursing and Prescriptive Authority, 1900 to the present." Barbara Brodie, now retired, has been named Associate Director, Arlene Keeling is now Director and John Kirchgessner Assistant Director of The Center For Nursing Historical Inquiry.

Commencing in 2004 one issue per year of Nursing Inquiry will be devoted to historical research, methodology and book reviews. Nursing Inquiry has long been committed to publishing high quality historical research on nursing. However, increasing demand for special issues on historical research has led to this exciting new initiative. The first history issue will be September 2004. Deadlines for manuscripts will be 31 January 2004 and they will go through the normal review process.
